The Martin Agency's, Kristen Cavallo never thought she’d be a CEO. She 100% wanted to be that cool, swashbuckling momma taking her kids on international escapades around the globe. Luckily, she said yes to both. With over 25 years’ experience working with high-octane brands, in her first year back at The Martin Agency in 2018 she led the charge to eradicate the gender wage gap, tackle invisibility with diversity, and create impactful ideas for clients like GEICO, CarMax, UPS and Buffalo Wild Wings. In 2019, Cavallo was named Executive of the Year by Advertising Age and was included in Adweek’s Trailblazers list along with agency CCO Karen Costello.

Looking for a little friendly competition with costumes? You’re in luck. Dodgeball is back. And better than ever. Join us at Sugar Creek Brewery for food, drinks and prizes as we battle to see who’s best in Charlotte. Get a team of 6-10 players and don’t forget, the 5 D's of dodgeball: dodge, duck, dip, dive and drink. 

Entry Fee: 
$150 per team (6-10 players per team)
$15 per observer

*Entry fee includes food, drink tickets and souvenir. 

General Rules: 
Maximum of 6 players on the court for each team, with a minimum of 2 females at the start of the game. Players can rotate in as teammates catch balls from the opposing team, but there is still a maximum of 6 players on the court per team at all times.

The Unifying Voice For Advertising

Ever wondered what’s going on AAF? Who’s in charge and where is it going? Well we are pleased to announce that Steve Pacheco, National AAF President & CEO will be speaking here in Charlotte, NC. It doesn’t get any higher than that!

“I have been deeply connected to the AAF and its mission throughout my career in advertising – it has been my North Star,”

Steve is tasked with designing a future-forward organization consistent with the rapid, seismic change impacting the advertising landscape. His goal is to help in development of the AAF National’s programs, services and membership; volunteer engagement; and serving as the voice of the advertising industry through advocacy and lobbying on key issues from free commercial speech to the advancement of diversity and inclusion.

He has produced a bevy of award-winning work, including more than a dozen Super Bowl commercials, as well as FedExCup, NFL and NASCAR advertising campaigns. Previously, he worked for International Paper as Director of Advertising and Marketing Communications, where he directed the company’s 1996 Summer Olympics sponsorship.

Pacheco is the first AAF president & CEO to have held an active leadership role at every level of the organization, beginning in 1984 at the collegiate level, then president of the Memphis Advertising Federation in 1991 and rising to chairman of the AAF National Board of Directors in 2011.

2019 Silver Medal Awards Winner Nancy Haynes

Join AAF Charlotte as we celebrate
the career and legacy of Nancy Haynes!

Nancy Haynes has been some variation of principle/co-owner/president of successful Charlotte-based agencies since the early 70s. From her “Chesson” days (1973-1983) to Bi-Media (1984-1998) to Collins, Haynes & Lully (1998-2018). In that time, she’s developed a reputation as a media strategist and creative thinker. Nothing may capture Nancy’s contribution more to the general advancement of advertising better than her commitment to “reaching the people who count.” She taught this methodology as far and wide as she could.

She worked alongside many fellow Charlotte’s Silver Medal winners to collaborate on countless campaigns. To that point, she has served on many boards such as AAF and the original Charlotte Ad2, Charlotte Council on Alcoholism & Chemical Dependency, University Radio Foundation, to name a few. But it would be apt to say her overall passion for mentoring others in industry has itself been a significant standalone contribution to the welfare of others.

April Speaker: Fyre Festival Designer, Oren Aks


Oren Aks, a designer and social media consultant, has risen very quickly to fame. This meteoric rise is in thanks or perhaps not thanks to the documentaries released by Hulu “Fyre Fraud” and the Netflix “Fyre”. Both of these documentaries break down the disaster known as the Fyre Festival. Both documentaries put up a mirror to the FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) in the millennial age.

Oren Aks wasn’t aware of what it would become. He was given the task to roll out a social media campaign and boy did he ever. This campaign went viral and orange was everywhere. His use of design, gorgeous photography and smart thinking is only part of the story. Come join us and let him tell you the rest.

About the Silver Medal Award:

The American Advertising Federation's Silver Medal Award Program was established in 1959 to recognize men and women who have made outstanding contributions to advertising and who have been active in furthering the industry's standards, creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern. Annually, AAF Charlotte bestows this honor upon an outstanding member of the local advertising community.

Silver Medal Award Criteria: The Silver Medal winner will be selected by a panel of judges made up of past winners and AAF Charlotte members. Judges use the following criteria when making their selections.           

Contribution to His/Her Company - The recipient must have achieved success in one of the following areas of work: advertising agency, advertiser, media or advertising service.            

Creative Ability - The recipient must have shown a consistent, high degree of original thinking in their field.          

Contributions to the General Advancement of Advertising - The recipient must have worked to increase the stature and raise the standards of the advertising profession.           

Contributions to the Community - The recipient should be someone who has been active in civic, religious, or other groups dedicated to human or social welfare.
